February Break Reading Questions Page
While you are reading chapters 19, 20, 21, 22 and 23 over break, if you run into any problems or are confused, leave a comment here. Then, either your classmates or I will help you understand. This is not graded, nor are you expected to post here over break; however, if you run into problems, I want you to know you can leave a comment here and I will get back to you (or one of your classmates can help).
Remember to post any questions you have when reading chapters 19-23 over break here. I just re-read the chapters last night and I think you'll understand what's going on but, just in case, know that I'm here to help. Happy reading!
ReplyDeleteWhy was it wrong for Tom Robinson to feel sorry for a white woman (Mayella Ewwell)?
ReplyDeleteTim Beltrami 8-4
That's a good question, Tim. I think of a few issues. First, if he were to appear sympathetic and caring toward Mayella, maybe it would have appeared he did have feelings for her and make him seem more guilty. Also, it would have been a complete power reversal - can you imagine how it would have looked in the 1930s in Alabama for a black man to take the roll of "caregiver" to a white woman? And, finally, since he looked sorry for her because of her poor life, it would have looked like he was passing judgment on a white family. Do you feel any of these might be true - or maybe a combination - or maybe something completely different.
ReplyDeleteThose all make complete sense. Thank you.
