  1. I think tha that when the book said that no black person would walk by the house without going to the opposite side of the street and start whistling was racist

  2. Why do you think so, Michael? I'm curious why you think this (I'm not saying I completely disagree with you) but I see it that they were afraid of the Radley house just like most others in Maycomb. Maybe you're reading something more into it...I'd love to hear your thoughts.

  3. I think that what we have read so far hasn't talked much about this topic yet but, I agree when the book said that people would walk by the Radley house on the other side of the street and whistle it was racist. Alexandra Rozek

  4. I think that even though calpurnia is black she works with the whites. Most people would disagree with this though just because she is black

    1. And what's interesting is that Atticus yells at Scout and tells her to remember everything Calpurnia does for their family. That wouldn't be something people would say during that time period.

  5. Jesse decker-8-6 I do not completely understand why the black people walk on the other side of the street. I know it has to do with the inequality of races. Racial inequality is wrong, it is wrong because no matter what color you are ,you are the same on the inside

    1. You're right, Jesse, it is not right. I think the incident you're thinking of is when they walked back the Radley house. Seems Boo has frightened the entire town and they won't even walk in front of their house for fear of whatever it is that Boo will do. Thanks for contributing to the discussion!

  6. Kaitlyn Hart- I think that making blacks walk on the other side of the street was just a way for whites to keep their superiority. They did this because if blacks really got to know whites and interacted with them, they would realize they are the same as them.

    1. Thanks for your post, Katie. Unfortunately, it's a bit late for the first week so this will count towards your second week post.

Don't you think the Finch's relationship with Calpurnia speaks to your argument that if we just got to know people, we would appreciate them for who they are, not what they are?!?

  7. Madison Badgley- I do not think that the whites understand at all that the black people are the same as them. I think the white people just want to say that they have power of the blacks, which is why they make them walk on the opposite side of the street. It is unfair and racist. They should accept hem for who they are, not what they look like.

    1. You will have a lot to write about in the 2nd book...actually, even quite a bit in the chapter when Calpurnia takes Jem and Scout to her church.

  8. kaitlyn Hart- I believe that jem and scout are starting to disrespect and disobey Calpurnia. I believe it is because they are getting older and the world is started to effect them. This is because they are realizing how the world treats blacks and they think if they don't respect their color why should I.

    1. They are starting to get a little snarky. But I do appreciate your generalization that if the world doesn't respect their color why should they - that's great critical thinking.

  9. Alexandra Rozek- Eevn though Calpernia is black and the kids are white she till treats them the same as if they were also black. I think that people take race inequality to far and it does notmatter what color your skin is you are both humans.

    1. I completely agree - we are all of the human race.

  10. I thought that it was racist when Mr. Radely said that he saw a 'negro' in his garden he said that if that 'negro' or any other dog caome into his yard he would kill them. If he know that it had been a white boy he would have acted differently.

  11. I believe that everyone questions the Finch's because of Calpurina. If she was not a black woman people would not question her but because of her race they worry.

  14. I feel like it was wrong of the Finch's to question Calpurina because it doesn't matter of what skin color they are. Jem and Scout were starting to dislike her because the world is effecting them as they got older. -Taylor

  15. I think Jem and Scout should start to respect Calpurnia because it doesn't matter of the skin color. They shouldn't question her or bother her about it. I think it is wrong. -Taylor

  16. Kaitlyn Hart- in this section, Aunt Alexandra and her grandson Francis come to visit. Francis was being rude to scout and she was mocking atticus for representing Tom robinson (a black man) in a case against other whites. It was not right for francis to outcast atticus by calling him a negro lover.

    1. Where might have Francis heard such a horrible thing?

  17. I think that it was racist how Francis said Atticus was a "negro lover". Also many people say this, even though in some cases they don't mean it in a bad way it can still hurt some people's feelings.

  19. I think that many people are starting to see that the Finches are people good nature helping Tom Robinson even though people keep making fun of Atticus. Many people think badly about Atticus effect scout and jem greatly becasue of Atticus's decision. Sadly many people in the neighborhood wont talk to the Finches because of Tom

  20. Most people in Maycomb would sooner believe a drunk white man instead of a black man who has done nothing wrong before. Tom might be innocent, but no one will believe him because he is going against a white man.

  21. Its suprising that even though atticus is a white man an a good laywer no matter what he does Tom Robision wont be nont gulity and everyone makes fun of the finches becasue of his good rights

  22. Kaitlyn Hart- In one section Aunt Alexandra says that she wants Calpurnia to move out because she is no longer needed. Atticus refuses to kick her out. I feel that aunt Alexandra attempted this because she knew that the kids liked Calpurnia better than her.

  23. Kaitlyn Hart- In chapters 13 and 14 Calpurnia starts to take scout and jem to her "colored" church. the church is very poor, and not many of them can read so they echo Zeebo (Calpurnias eldest son). Soon after going to church with Calpurnia every sunday, Aunt Alexandra comes to visit and forbids them from going to Calpurnia's church anymore.

  24. Taylor Arana- I think it was a bad thing for Calpurnias aun alexandra to kick her out of the house because she didn't need her anymore. She was like saying she was useless now.

  25. When the mob showed up at the jail and tried to lynch Tom Robinson, i thought that they were only doing becasue he was black. I doubt that they would lynch a white man.

  26. The people need to realize the way calpurnia handles the white children. They need to understand the way minorities were treated early in oour country and they are still strong enough to handle the people who enslaved them. I think the least the whites could do is treat them equally. -jesse decker

  27. I think on the end of page 85 to the begining of page 86 when Cal was talking to Jem and scout about how no one like the people that were mixed colored she said the black pople didn't like them because they were part white and the white people didn't like them because they were part black she also told them not to speak with them - Noah Emminger

  28. It was surprising when calpurnia brought jem and scout into her church and the other members treated jem and scout with some grief and displeasure. Even though they knew that they were with cal they didnt appreciate them being there

  30. When jem started talking about mixed children and how they were not accepted by black and white people i though that no one wanted them becasue the white people considered them to be black and the black people considered them to be white

  31. Kaitlyn Hart- I believe that it is unfair that they are beginning to find out Tom Robinson is innocent and either way he will be convicted guilty because he is black.

  32. Alexandra Rozek- When everybody was getting mad at Attics not only for helping Tom Robinson win the case that he wanted him to win that it was not fair for them to be mad at Attics.

  33. I dont like the way the book says cal was"talking like them" like they are not people like others. Also I thought ot was weird that lula would question cal about brong them to church. It should not be that big of a Deal to either race

  37. Kaitlyn hart- in chapter 19 it would be frowned upon if anyone found out that mayella harassed a black man instead of the other way around.

  38. I'm glad the "mixed" children comment made you angry - in today's society, biracial children are accepted (I would hope) as the individuals they are. Back then, you can imagine the trouble it caused. Think back to those Jim Crow laws. And, Katie, could you imagine how even more difficult it would have been to prove that Mayella was the one going after Tom Robinson? Yikes!

    ReplyDelete
  39. i think that if tom robinson was a white man he would not have been charged as guilty. There was almost no evidence that he had raped her, if anything Mayella was the one who came onto tom

  40. Taylor Arana- It made me angry to,that the mixed children weren't treated respectfully because there both white and black so neither of them want them

  41. I thought that it was racist In chapter 23. In chapter 23 on page 116 I read that Atticus was talking to Jem and he said that "It's a white man's word against a black man's, the white man always wins. I believe that this is racist because in today's society everyone is treated equal.

  44. Kaitlyn hart- One theme of this book is that if you are black in the south, no matter what someone will discriminate against you. An example is that tom Robinson was innocent yet he was going to jail or he was going to die because he is black. Another example is at first no one would give tom Robinson's wife a job, just because they thought tom was guilty.
