Back in the days of slavery and after that not many people had compassion for people who were not a white man. In the book To Kill A Mockingbird it is a representation of how color skinned people were mistreated. In the beginning of the book there is an example of how people did not give compassion towards others. The first thing that happened in the book was Jem breaking his elbow. Usually there would be someone mentioning how bad they felt for him but after we were informed of his injury they only kept things negative and there was no compassion. Compassion is feeling emotions for other people (positive). Also in this book they talked about how a rich man would not let colored skin kids in his yard to get something that flew over the fence. That is an example of how the rich man could not forgive them and let him in his yard. Forgiveness is accepting the fact that someone did something on accident or wrong to you on purpose and you accept kindly that they have wronged you iin someway and you move on with no grudges.
An example of compassion and forgoveness is when scout was beating up the Cunningham boy, but he did not fight back. After she was done beating up the boy she realized that what he did wrong.
One example would be that when Jem went up to touch the Radley's house, they thought if they were to be seen, they'd be dead. Instead, when Boo saw them, Boo did nothing but just look back at them.
You are making an inference that it was indeed Boo who saw them (but you are right). We have yet to be formally introduced to Boo but do you see how Harper Lee is building the suspense and making us believe Boo is this big, scary person?
Tim Beltrami 8-5: An act of compassion was presented when Jem, Dill, and Scout were trying to slip a note to Boo Radley. It may have seemed like an act of torture to Atticus, but I think they just wanted to show Boo some compassion so that he wouldn't be cooped up inside the house until he dies. They may have wanted to learn his story, and they may have been nosy, but is it wrong for an ignorant kid to try to be kind to someone by offering them an ice cream cone?
This is extremely insightful. We know the kids are scared of Boo Radley because of his reputation but I think you're on to something that they wish he just came out. Then, they'd finally see him AND they might be able to make him happier. Good thinking!
This is interesting - do you think he's angry at them for trying to sneak a peek at him? Or, if he is truly leaving the prizes in the tree hole, might he be just playing with them? If this is true, might he find them kind of humorous? Just making you think more....
When Mrs. Maudie's house burnt down, she was okay with it, unlike how others would react. She was actually okay with what was going on. She said, "I'd rather have a smaller house anyways".
An act of compassion was when the kids saw the snow for the first time. Also when Jem asked how to make a snowman and they said they needed snow so they went outside and said they needed more so they went to Miss Maudie's and asked her for her snow and she said take all of it. So when they got back home with the snow they made the snowman and said it looked like Mr. Avery, so it was a complete success.
Exactly, Dante - Miss Maudie was compassionate towards their desires to build the snowman by telling them to take all of her snow (heck, they can come to take all the snow out of my yard, too!). And, remember, Atticus didn't think it was so great that the snowman looked exactly like Mr. Avery; he made them change it a bit so it looked like Miss Maudie (he knew Miss Maudie wouldn't get angry and that she'd probably find it pretty funny since she likes Jem and Scout).
No, she didn't. And while I think she should have felt compassionate, don't you secretly think Francis deserved it? I know, that's not very compassionate, either!
Week3. In this book there is not alot of compassion or forgiveness.ex) whe n scout was Swearing and his uncle Jack did not like it but they do not say sorry or guilty for what they say and act.
Exactly - and I think it was compassionate of Uncle Jack to actually listen to Scout's side of the story. Not many adults would take the time to hear out a little kid - hmmmm....maybe Uncle Jack and Atticus are similar "gentlemen".
The person that shot Tim Johnson was forgiving himself for shooting the dog. also she had a compassion for telling everybody that their was a rapid dog.8-5

You're right, Philip - that was very compassionate. Except remember Miss Maudie said Stephanie wasn't going to get her cake recipe (I think it was cake???)
Mrs. Dubose showed compassion towards Jem and Finch because when she died, she gave them a candy box, maybe showing that she didn't want to be remembered as an old, disgusting jerk.
I never thought of it that way! Maybe she did want the last impression to be a good one. And re-read how Jem reacts - I think he was crying a bit when he heard she had died.
When Atticus had to shoot Tim Johnson, he had remember what a good shot he was. He stopped hunting a while ago because he thought that God had given him an unfair advantage.

As an example Scout and Jem are always next to each other for one another but yet they don't show there compassion. They seem to act like tough people but really you can tell that they do have compassion because of there trust in each other and that as siblings they always be there for each other.

When Dill was found under the bed, Scout and Atticus showed him compassion by giving him dinner and letting him stay the night. I thought Atticus would have been mad about Dill hiding under the bed, but he actually was very kind to Dill.
An example of forgiveness that can be shown within the last few chapters is when Calpurnia told Atticus that she would go to jail with him but Atticus told her no but the only reason was for her saftey and he did not want anything to happen to her. I think that Calpurnia should forgive Atticus for trying to protect and look out for her.
I think she does - and I wonder if she's really angry at him or angry at the situation that made Atticus have to defend Tom Robinson outside of the courtroom.
An example of compassion is when aunt alexandra was telling Atticus that they should get rid of Calpurnia, because she thought that they did not need her. but then Atticus refused with the idea. I think that this shows compassion because Atticus could of agreed, but did not.
An example of compassion is when Jem, Scout, and Dill are taken into the balcony by Reverend Sykes. Even though they are white, the black people get up and give them their seats, which could've been a sign that they were afraid, but Reverend Sykes still watched them.

In chapter 19, Dill feels disgusted by the racism showed by Mr. Gilmer towards Tom Robinson, and wanted to know how someone could be so inconsiderate and not show compassion towards him just because he was accused of something (which doesn't necessarily mean he's guilty).
Compassion by Atticus is shown in many ways for his client. However many people do not support atticus because of his clients skin color and the fact of them judging a book by the cover. People not be racist and show some compassion towards others who are truly not guilty of doing harm.
Mayella had a crush on Tom Robinson and she told him to kiss her and he said no. so mr ewell said that tom attacked her and he went to trial and he was guilty so he went to jail and he was going to be put to death either way so he decided to try and escape from jail. so he did and he got shot and died .
This week I thought that the news editorial about Tom Robinson was very compassionate. He wrote good things about Tom, unlike other people would have. He said he was innocent in the first place. Then after he said he was shot for no reason also.
Marissa olivieri 8-6: Forgiveness is diffenitelly not given to Tom Robinson. There is no feeling present to the person who shot Tom Robinson and the unnessicary amount of bbullets shot at him while he was trying to escape. When you shoot somebody you would expect the shooter to feel somewhat of compassion for killing a man. However they dont talk about any sad feelings For Tom Robinson and that shows how unimportant a colored man was considered should be treatef back then. Also how in these past chapters how they were judging people by what they look like. If Tom Robinson was white he prpbably wouldnt have been in as serious life threatining issues as he was from being a colored man.
In the end of this novel i feel like compassion is a big lesson that the author was trying to teach to people who read his book. I feel that the author showed how you cant judge people by the way they look. Whether you have even darker skin or light skin you should not be judged for that. Also as the forgiveness aspect of this book is that even if you feel someoneis guilty for something you should forgive them gulity or not.

You're right, Cameron - and I think it was noble of her to be more concerned about disrupting the neighbors' lives and risking their homes.
